A video game review? I figure I may as well make a review of some video game sooner or later, right? I mean I play enough of them as of late lol. So which one to review? Well I figure I should review Resident Evil 5 at the suggestion of my youngest brother, (which is his favorite game mind you) so here goes.
To start off, you play as Chris Redfield (or Sheva Alomar if you're player 2 or have beaten the game and choose her), and if you've played RE 4, the game mechanics haven't changed too much aside from a few optional control tweaks, as you can play the game with the same controls that RE 4 had should you so choose. However, in THIS game you now have a partner to work with. Now many people I've talked to were very much against the idea of a computer controlled partner, and I would tend to agree with them, IF I had not changed one little thing in the options menu, called "Partner reacts to attack" or whatever. Which basically tells Sheva (or Chris after you beat the game once) whoever your partner is, to start attacking whatever enemy YOU attack. Now, this may sound like a good thing at first, UNTIL your partner starts blasting you in the back of your head most of the time. Now this may not hurt you, but it does waste a lot of ammo, which is lame. Now if you turn that lovely little feature off, your partner works like a charm.
Human co-op in the game is amazing (so long as you're cohort doesn't suck at the game) blasting the baddies and saving each other can make the game very epic indeed. A lot of people tend to knock the quicktime-esque events as it seems to be done a lot lately in video games, but it still works and it works very well indeed to keep the tempo up in the game.
As for the writing in the game, the storyline runs pretty smoothly, voice-acting is pretty darn spot-on, and the choreographed video fight sequences are pretty cool too. With a wide array of enemies to blast away, along with more than enough firepower to sift through to pick your preferred method of death dealing (unlimited chain-gun anyone? Rockets maybe?) the action remains top notch in game. Later, after the initial release, VS. mode was released and it's pretty cool too, but it's by far no FPS or Gears of War in terms of fluidity, as you cannot run AND gun at the same time, but it's entertaining none the less.
Some things I would've liked to have seen in this game:
1-An actual cover system. Now there IS a few segments in the game where you can use cover once in a while, but why couldn't I have it throughout the entire game? It sure would've helped.
2-A dodge button. This would've been awesome to have. Just like way back in RE 3, a dodge button would've been an awesome addition to this game. With so many enemies able to flank you and come at you at once, being able to dodge would really have helped out.
3-Bring back the defensive weapons. This feature was introduced in the RE 1 remake on the Gamecube (may it rest in peace). And was an awesome idea also. This feature was great for that last ditch effort to save yourself in a pinch.
4-Being able to run AND gun at the same time. 'Nuff said on this feature I think. ^^
Now a few of these features could possibly have been removed due to the fact that you have a partner who could potentially save you in a few serious scrapes, but I still say these features, or even a couple of any of them could've increased playability.
Despite it's flaws (and there aren't too many of them) the game was pretty amazing, and it tied up the storyline pretty well. I give it a solid 8/10.
